Owner Brings Dying Dog To The Hospital, But The Vets Wrap Up The Dog In Plastic

When Elle the 2-year-old Chihuahua-Maltese cross got into a brawl with another dog, she had no idea her tiny body was too fragile to endure the attack. By the time her owner bailed her out of the fight, the poor little creature had already been bitten through the chest by the other dog. Elle was rushed to the Albavet care center in Fife, Scotland, but the vet team was worried to see the dog’s potentially fatal injuries and her “Michelin Man” body.

Elle was down with a 2-centimeter-deep bite wound punctured through her heart and lungs. But as her skin wasn’t broken, her respiratory mechanism was completely jeopardized. So every time she gasped for air, the air leaked under her skin instead and spread through her system – causing her body to puff up like a balloon.
The vet team, consisting of Martin, Alan and Christy, were faced with a near-impossible task as they tried to bring Elle’s swelling down. In usual cases, vets use compressive therapy to inhibit the swelling, but the general methods weren’t effective on Elle. After some quick thinking, the vets used a simple plastic wrap to create the necessary compression!
Once Elle was bound tight like a burrito with the film of plastic, her oxygen level stabilized and brought her some pain relief. Within 2 days, her swelling was brought under control and she was prepped up for a complex anesthetic surgery to fix the internal damage. She successfully made it through the procedure with minimal post-operative complications!
Elle is on her way to recovery now. Her pain is manageable and she has already started physical therapy. The genius vet team feels blessed to have provided such crucial critical care to the wee pooch even during pandemic-stricken times. We are really proud of them and Ellie is one lucky girl! We wish her a speedy recovery!
