Old Dog Can’t Walk Anymore, But Goes Around In A Wagon Cuddling Dying Patients

Anyone who has ever been to a hospice care center will most certainly be familiar with the eerie feeling of death and desolation lurking across the patient rooms. But for the residents at the San Diego Hospice and Institute for Pallative Medicine, a therapy dog named Baxter Bussey was their faithful sanctuary of hope for the past several years.

Baxter’s entire life revolved around bringing joy and relief to the sick and dying patients in hospice care. At 19 years and 6 months, he was the oldest working therapy dog in the world. This video was taken during the final month of his life, and it beautifully managed to capture his dedication and commitment to ailing patients consumed with dread.

In this video, we see mom Melissa Joseph using a wagon to move Baxter around the hospital corridors. Despite being gripped with arthritis and age-related weakness and vulnerability, Baxter insists on cuddling every depressed patient who could use his presence. He snuggles with each elderly resident for hours and makes them smile with his comforting touch.

Baxter passed away peacefully within 3 weeks of appearing in his final video. While his work on Earth is over, his legacy lives on through his inspiring body of work. He loved humans unconditionally and helped them let go of life with grace and in peace. Baxter was a precious blessing to mankind and he will always be an icon among therapy dogs!
