MEET THE KING OF SAXONY BIRD-OF-PARADISE
The King of Saxony bird-of-paradise (Pteridophora alberti), is a bird in the bird-of-paradise family (Paradisaeidae). Adult members of this species are about 22 cm long with the male having black upperparts, appearing green in sunlight, and canary yellow underparts. He has a black bill, brown-grey legs, and an aqua-green mouth. Just behind his dark brown eyes are enamel-blue brow plumes that he can erect at will. So remarkable are these plumes, when the first specimen was brought to Europe it was thought to be fake.
The King of Saxony bird-of-paradise is endemic to New Guinea, found mainly along the central mountain ranges of both Indonesia and Papua-New Guinea.
