Stray Dog Refuses To Be Separated From Its Elephant Friend In Her Final Hours

Meet Pancake, once a stray dog wandering the streets of Thailand she is now a very important part of the Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary (BLES).

The sanctuary focus on taking in elderly elephants for example in the image below, an elderly elephant who was passing away was being stroked and comforted by her friend called Boon Thong.

A few years later, it was Boon Thong’s time of need, and luckily for her, she had people around her, just like she was for her friend a few years back.

What I bet she didn’t expect, was Pancake to hurry over to her the moment she realised Boon Thong wasn’t feeling well.

Pancake, who is clearly not an elephant, enjoys the peace and calm in the sanctuary which means she fits in perfectly.

So Pancake and Katherine Connor, founder and CEO of Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary (BLES) sat with Boon Thong for hours and hours as they remembered her life and said their goodbyes.

Boon Thong had quite a life, she was in her 60s and was rescued five years prior from a riding camp.

“She was used to carrying tourists on her back for hours on end and after doing this for almost 30 years, she nearly broke her back,” Katherine explained.

She was clearly exhausted by the time she arrived at the sanctuary, but it didn’t take long for her to realise how different life was here.

Finally, she was able to be truly free, to discover herself, what she does and doesn’t like and to actually be able to roam and forage in a forest.

“She was free to be in control of her own life, to make her own decisions, to express herself,” Katherine wrote in a tribute this week. “Boon Thong was a creature of habit. She had her favorite spots in our release areas that she would always gravitate to during our daily walks. She always scratched on the same tree and she always stopped at the same spot in the stream to throw mud all over herself.
