It occurred in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and when they passed a storm drain Georgie simply started barking like a wild dog. At first, the woman thought that she’d heard the meows of a cat in the drain, but she wanted to make sure and got on her knees to check it out.

Then it became clear that the sounds weren’t coming from a cat, but it was a baby’s cry for help.

Immediately, Charmaine stopped a car on the street to ask for help. A good Samaritan named Cornie Viljoen assisted right away.

Luckily, the man had a steel bar in his car and they were able to use it to pry the concrete storm drain slab to the side. When it was finally open enough, Cornie jumped in and he was immediately faced with a nasty surprise: dozens of stings by a red ant colony.

“When I got into the hole it was higher than my head and it was so narrow that I had to go down on my knees and I couldn’t bend over so had to feel down for the baby below,” the man told Daily Mail. ”The red ants were stinging my legs but then I felt this baby’s leg and then saw the baby and I realized that this was a crime scene so I took a flash picture and handed my phone up to Charmaine.”

The red ants seemed to ignore the baby, thankfully, or things could’ve taken a turn for the worse.

Cornie approached the small child and made sure to be very careful.

Charmaine then called the emergency service so the baby could get treatment at a hospital as soon as possible.

The poor child was completely naked with the umbilical cord still attached, and she still had a rough road to recovery once she arrived at the hospital. Doctors treated her for hypothermia and she also suffers from respiratory issues.
The only way that the baby could’ve gotten in the drain is that she was abandoned by someone and essentially left to die.

‘There is a possibility that the person who did this may have come from outside the area and placed the child there. We are appealing for witnesses and the mother of this baby to come forward,” Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu told.

Charmaine is absolutely thankful that Georgie started barking, and that she decided to check out what those noises exactly were. She also explicitly wanted to thank Cornie for his help.

“I honestly believe I was meant to find that baby by God as I usually take a different route on my dog walk but for some reason went another way. I cannot help but feel that there is some sort of a plan and a purpose for that little girls’ life – it is a miracle without a doubt,” she said.

“When Georgie first started barking at the noises I thought it was a cat but then I realized it was a baby and people must have thought I was mad because I was trying to stop all these passing cars. I don’t know what would have happened if this guy had not stopped to help me.”

It’s absolutely tragic what happened to this baby, but she was luckily rescued just in time. As for Georgie, he’s being praised as a hero and rightfully so!

At the hospital, they gave the baby the name Grace April and they now hope that baby Grace can find a loving family who wants to take her in soon.
