All dogs deserve a wonderful and loving home.
Getting a pet is no easy task, and you have to make sure that you’re fully responsible for everything. If an owner isn’t ready, a dog may end up getting abandoned or surrendered to an animal shelter. They don’t deserve this kind of treatment.
For example, take this one St Bernard who was suddenly surrendered at the shelter.
A breeder went to Hearts United for Animals, an animal shelter based in Nebraska to surrender a St. Bernard dog. The dog’s name was Cosmo, and no one seems to know the reason why he had been surrendered since he is such a sweet cuddle-bug. Cosmo was groomed, treated, fed, and even taken out for walks at the shelter. He seemed to be very happy. However, they knew that he could have a better life with a loving owner.
The staff decided to put up an adoption ad for him online.
It wasn’t long before his online ad was spotted by an animal-loving couple, Jayne and Geoff who went far enough to rent a car and go on a long drive to adopt a 130-pound St. Bernard.
“When I decided that I was going to fly to Nebraska, rent a car and drive home with a 130 pound dog, I was pretty sure that most of the world would think I was crazy.” Jayne told The Dodo.
The couple had set sights on the pooch and immediately fell in love with it.
It was when they saw Cosmo’s adoption ad that they fell in love with him. According to Jayne, Cosmo was looking at the camera with eyes that said, “Please take me home.” The couple lived hndreds of miles away from the shelter, but they knew that when they meet that adorable gentle giant, it will be all worth it.
The couple finally arrived to see the dog oozing with excitement.
Jayne and Geoff arrived at the shelter and they finally got to meet Cosmo personally. The couple slowly approached the big dog from his pen, anxious about their first meeting. They brought him a toy crocodile as a gift, hoping to give a good first impression, and Cosmo was certainly pleased about it. Cosmo was cuddly and affectionate, and it was as if he already knew that Jayne was the kind woman who was going to take him to his fur-ever home.
It was time to give Cosmo the life that he deserves.
Cosmo and Jayne spent a little more time at the shelter to play, and the shelter’s owner, Kirsty, watched them while crying as she knew that Cosmo finally had a new family to belong to.
The pooch needed a little encouragement and urging to get him to go with Jayne and Geoff. The sweet dog was pretty fearful about getting into the car, and it took a total of three people to gently coax him into the car bed.
Cosmo had more friends than he’d had in his whole life.
Cosmo arrived at his new home, and he immediately warmed up to the kids and the other animals in the area. Despite having limited experience interacting with humans and other animals, Cosmo proved what a gentle giant he was. Watching him play with the others is such a heartwarming scene.
Adjusting takes time, but the couple is sure that Cosmo will do just fine
The couple observed that Cosmo hasn’t experienced a lot in his life with his previous owner. Jayne shared:
“Cosmo has never lived in a home before as far as we know. We don’t think he’s ever climbed up stairs before, and he doesn’t seem to understand treats. (Also) He often wants to climb into spaces which aren’t St Bernard sized. He’s been here for less than 24 hours, and we just love seeing him have what he has now, knowing that he didn’t have any of it before.”
Over the next few weeks at her home, Jayne documented all of Cosmo’s new achievements as he settled into his new home. These included finally being comfortable to climb into the car by himself, discovering what was “people food” and what was dog food, swimming in the lake for the first time, and figuring out how to use stairs.
Cosmo’s new chapter begins
This St Bernard is sure to have the time of his life in his new home. Jayne and Geoff made sure to give it their best to take care of the sweet pooch and give him the happiness he deserves.
“We want him to have fun and feel like life is an adventure, but also feel very safe and loved, as I don’t think he’s had any chance to feel these things in his life so far,” Jane said.
